FLI Precast Solutions Supports Landmark Low-Carbon Concrete Demonstration
FLI Precast Solutions was proud to take part in a landmark demonstration at Sisk’s Cherry Orchard site, showcasing Ireland’s first on-site use of clinker-free geopolymer concrete produced with biomass ash.
The project brought together Trinity College Dublin, Sisk, Roadstone, FLI Precast Solutions, Bord na Móna, and Construct Innovate to demonstrate how biomass ash, a byproduct from energy generation, can be repurposed into a high-performance, low-carbon construction material.
At the demonstration, FLI Precast displayed Kelly blocks and structural beams produced using 100% cement-free geopolymer binders, proving the material’s compatibility with precast manufacturing processes.
The project highlights the potential for major environmental benefits, including carbon reductions of 60–70% compared to CEM I and the possibility of saving up to 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually in Ireland.
Led by Prof Sara Pavia and Dr Zehao Lei of Trinity College Dublin, and supported by Construct Innovate’s seed funding programme, the research has developed patented technologies designed to make biomass ash concrete more practical for industry use.
This collaboration represents an important step towards a more circular and sustainable construction sector in Ireland. By turning a waste product into a valuable construction resource, the project demonstrates how innovation and partnership can help support national climate targets while creating scalable solutions for the built environment.
FLI Precast Solutions is delighted to have contributed to this important milestone and remains committed to supporting low-carbon innovation across the construction industry.
